SoFi has hired JPMorgan Chase and Citi veteran Stephen Simcock to serve as its general counsel, the fintech said in a press release Monday.
Simcock replaces SoFi’s chief legal officer, Rob Lavet, who is retiring.
Simcock, who joined JPMorgan in 2014, had been vice chair of the bank’s legal department and general counsel of consumer banking. Previously, he spent 12 years at Citi, in stints as general counsel for the bank’s mortgage unit; commercial-banking group; retail-banking group; international consumer bank; global consumer bank; and Europe, Middle East and Africa consumer and private banks, according to LinkedIn.
“I have spent my entire career in consumer banking and am thrilled to join a firm known for its focus on helping its members achieve financial independence through a strong suite of consumer-focused products,” Simcock said in Monday’s release. “SoFi’s mission and values align perfectly with mine.”
SoFi CEO Anthony Noto said he is “thrilled” with hiring Simcock.
“His deep experience in financial services — along with demonstrated success as a culture and business leader — make him an excellent fit for SoFi as we pursue our path to becoming a top 10 financial institution,” Noto said.
Under Lavet, SoFi’s legal department helped the company receive a banking charter, among other notable accomplishments. Lavet, who joined SoFi in 2012, will continue serving the fintech as an adviser and a director of the company’s banking arm, according to Monday’s release.
“Rob’s leadership has been critical in helping the company at every major milestone of its existence,” Noto said. “Throughout his tenure, Rob has been the gold standard of a SoFi culture carrier, demonstrating our core values in all he does.”
As general counsel, Simcock is set to oversee legal affairs, regulatory compliance and corporate governance, SoFi said.
