BNY has hired a BP executive to serve as its next chief information officer and global head of engineering, the bank said in a release Tuesday.
Leigh-Ann Russell, executive vice president of innovation and engineering at the petroleum company, will join BNY on Sept. 15, the bank said.
Bridget Engle, the bank’s current CIO, will step down in September and leave the company later this year “after supporting a successful transition of her responsibilities,” a spokesperson for BNY told Banking Dive in an email Thursday.
Russell comes to BNY after an 18-year stint at BP, where she oversees digital, information technology, cybersecurity operations, engineering, safety and science, according to the bank’s release. She served as BP’s chief supply chain officer before her current role, according to her LinkedIn profile.
“I am very excited to begin the next chapter of my career at a company with such a pivotal role in the economy,” Russell wrote in a LinkedIn post. “BNY holds a unique position in the global financial system, and it is widely regarded as being at the forefront of technological innovation.”
Russell will report to BNY CEO Robin Vince and serve on the bank’s executive committee.
“I am delighted to welcome Leigh-Ann to BNY,” Vince said in Tuesday’s release. “Leigh-Ann brings a true engineering and platforms mindset that will enable our continued success in the adoption and application of technology."
Engle, meanwhile, will leave BNY after seven years. She came to the bank from Bank of America, where she served as CIO of the Charlotte, North Carolina-based lender’s consumer bank and, later, CIO of global banking and markets.
Earlier in her career, she spent 17 years at Lehman Brothers, and was that bank’s CIO In 2008. She also served brief stints with Barclays and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp., according to her LinkedIn profile.
The executive move comes roughly a week after BNY introduced a new logo in which the bank dropped “Mellon” from its branding.
